Forgot to say, yes the earth is "spheroid" or an "oblate ellipsoid" but not in a significant way. (IMHO) It's like 30 miles fatter at the equator than at the poles but we're dealing with an 8,000 mile diameter, so we're talking fractions of a decimal.
